Is Excision Surgery the Best Option for Endometriosis?

Is there any real reason *not* to have excision surgery for endo? I’ve been told by 3 OBGYNs that surgery isn’t necessarily a definite fix, that they may not get it all, that it could cause more scar tissue and more pain…but then I go online and do my own reading and research and so many people state that excision is the best way to go. Why am I not being told this by doctors? Should I be ignoring what I’m told by doctors or is there any truth to what they are saying? Thank you for the help!

For some reason OBGYN hate the idea that there is something better than BC and ablation surgery. I figure it’s due to lack of education, but so many of them don’t want to be educated either about it. I too was told by one that excision was a waste of my time, I was surgery seeking, etc. Still went ahead, did excision, and to be honest it’s the best thing I ever did. No it didn’t make me completely pain free, but I even woke up in the recovery room in less pain than when I went in. That to me already said a lot. It’s given me the ability to heal far beyond what I thought was possible. Now I’m leading a very normal life and in very minimal pain. Definitely worth it in my opinion.

Thank you for sharing! ❤️For a while, I was opposed to surgery. It just didn’t feel right at the time and I guess my pain levels were not as severe. It’s worse now and I’m hoping to conceive soon, so something is telling me that surgery is needed at this point. I’m looking forward to my appointment Tuesday. I am seeing Dr. Camran Nezhat in the Bay Area who is supposed to be one of the best. 🤞🏼

With any surgical procedure there are risks. They can’t even give a proper diagnosis without a laparoscopy, even. Seems silly to deny someone such a procedure if there’s an established medical need, they’re a candidate for the procedure, and they’re giving informed consent. You’re prob being told this by doctors because endometriosis isn’t as well known as it should be and I’m sorry they’re steering you away for those reasons! I would understand if there was another concern that interferes with surgery but without that….? Though surgery alone wasn’t enough to put my stage 3 endo into remission, it reduced my symptoms significantly. I did NOT have fun recovering but it was worth it.

I think you’re right. I think it stems from lack of education and expertise on the part of those doctors. Probably not even their fault - I just need to be in the care of an endo expert. I have an appointment with a highly recommended endo surgeon on Tuesday. I’m hoping I hear something from him that makes a real difference.

You're probably sitting in the wrong doctors office if that's what they're saying. There is no cure for endometriosis, but plenty of women have put their symtpoms into remission after surgery. I'd go to another doctor who knows what they're doing- check on Nancy's Nook and see if there's a doctor near you for starters. My surgeon was really skilled, got me into pelvic floor PT, and helped me get on the right track after surgery
