Can Smoking or Drugs Cause Derealization?

Can derealization be caused due to smoking or taking any other types of drugs?

SpookT is right. Do not take any drugs after an experience like that, it can cause serious harm. But I struggle a lot with feelings of detachment to reality and I also take edibles (with THC) it’s very nice having the ability to actually be immersed outside of myself. It’s like wearing a vr helmet but you still physically are experiencing things/acting things out (if that makes any sense at all) but also you jus generally feel pleasant and light. Typically all of my anxieties are forgotten when I’m high, I’m very appreciative of this fact. But the disorder as a whole is not spawned from drugs for the most part (maybe shrooms tho, idk, they’re scary n powerful) I hope this helped and made sense !

Yes it can!!! The first time i experienced dissociation was from smoking weed. I had previously been smoking on occasion but this one night I had and it was my first time dissociating which led to panic. I have never been able to smoke or anything after that but from everything i’ve read it says to not try any drug again after you’ve had that experience

On the topic of drugs and depersonalization/derealization, I want to talk about anesthesia. I am assuming your depersonalization was caused by drugs and you may have a fear of drugs. I also share that fear. I was terrified of going under anesthesia because I feared it would make my depersonalization unbearable, when I wake up. But, I just went under general anesthesia for my wisdom teeth removal and when I woke up I felt completely fine. I didn't feel drugged or more dissociated; it was literally like waking up from a good sleep.

Yes, in a way. Drugs may trigger it in people who are likely to get it, but they do not single handedly cause derealization or depersonalization. Most commonly weed will trigger derealization/depersonalization. It's important to know that weed did not change anything in your brain. Mine was trigger by weed.
