It’s common for us to make brash decisions in moments of distress because it subconsciously makes us feel in control. Chances in your appearance, SH, and stress eating are examples. Try to find some enjoyable, healthy outlets that help you feel in control. Perhaps something artsy or something to keep you active, so that your body is busy instead of your mind.

While we cant necessarily control our depressive episodes, I like to believe we are more self praising than we think. When you feel yourself getting heated, try pointing out very specific things in the room (a purple glittery water cup, fabric flexible cvs bandages) or other methods to quickly distract your processing skills from these negative feelings

I used to. I learned to not do such a thing while I was hospitalized for a suicide attempt

I have the same issue, i try to channel it into a healthy outlet, I find it helpful to keep my hands busy (drawing, adult coloring books, using fidget toys) or doing something “weird” like showering in clothes or sleeping upside down in my bed. its not self- destructive but feels “weird” enough to get my mind to not want to do bad things anymore.

I experience that as well. If I get the urge to do something drastic, like getting a tattoo that I haven’t fully thought through, then I do something smaller, like drawing on my skin. Sometimes I want to run away from my life, but that’s not a viable option either, so visiting a coffee shop or taking a walk is best. Giving yourself some kind of outlet that is not ultimately permanent or harmful, but still scratches a mental itch would be my best suggestion.

Yes, I have frequently gone through depressive episodes where I begin to make rash decisions that are ultimately self-destructive. Almost like I am trying to punish myself for still being here and being so depressed. The thing that helps me the most is to recognize my self-destructive behavior and begin to change it to be something productive.
