Struggling with Depression and Hygiene

Does anyone else lose the will to care for yourself when your depression is bad? I feel disgusting but my general hygiene especially brushing my teeth and such gets so bad. I'm genuinely worried about losing my teeth because of it earlier than I ever should.

I definitely get like this too. I tell myself though, if I’m really worried then I need to get up and prevent that worry from growing. We only get one body so we have to respect it, even just occasionally. If you’re worried about your teeth, try an electric toothbrush. They boost brushing effectiveness with no extra effort on your part 👍🏻 drink some water before or after you brush your teeth for bonus health points!:) and don’t forget to brush your tongue!

I struggle with this often. I struggle tremendously with hygiene especially. My best advice for hygiene related is: Don't want to/ Can't brush your teeth? At least try to swish with some mouthwash that has floride in it Don't want to/ Can't shower? I'll take what my grandmother's called a "whores bath" (sorry I don't know the proper term) where you stand at the sink and just take a washcloth and a tiny bit of soap (can be done without soap too if it seems too much) and scrub your body or just the important bits like underarms and genitals. Don't want to/ Can't brush your hair? Have some detangler spray that you can just spray in your hair to help some. These might not help everyone but it's something to try, they aren't much but they can help with hygiene, even if you can't do all of them at least try to do one

Absolutely. I struggle with basic self care and I got comments about the state of my teeth at work one time and I've hated them ever since. I'm scared to go to the dentist but I try to at least floss with little things called "plackers" I believe and that helps a lot. I sometimes just quickly brush over them without toothpaste or anything to just "clean" them. The worst I've done is gone a week without bathing and that was my lowest low. Work and making myself go place with my partner keep me from looking like a walking dumpster fire.

The teeth are a hard one. I had similar issues and my teeth took the brunt of it. I've had 3 root canals and a tooth pulled and I'm only 30. Even if you only run a brush over them, taking care of your teeth is very important.

teeth definitely are a hard one. I have geneticly bad teeth and before the age of 23 I've had a root cannal and a tooth pulled with at least 3 teeth that desperately need pulled (and way too many cavities haha). Only running a brush over them can definitely help and I also find swishing for about a minute with floride mouthwash can also help a lot since floride is an active ingredient in a lot of toothpastes

I want to try those teeth whitening products but I'm afraid that they won't have any affect because there is so much plaque buildup and my gums bleed when I run a brush over them

Yes, I heavily struggle with this as not only is my depression getting really bad lately but my parents are constantly telling me "brush your teeth or you'll lose them" my orthodontist was also telling me how bad it was and that it needed to get better. I hate my teeth but I feel like I can't do anything at all about it now.

I definitely struggle with this. I thankfully and am so grateful to have family and friends who help me when I get really depressed. Moldy food, not showering, not brushing my hair or teeth, my room gets terrible I get it all. I get it and how I try to get back on track myself is i do one thing at a time. For instance I will start to shower every other day and slowly work to everyday then once I get that down I start working on cleaning once a week. It’s a slow journey but take time and forgive yourself. Everyone falls back once and awhile

Yes, I get like this and I'm sure lots of people do aswell. Generally you just have to push through it. Don't let yourself lose the care for yourself, obviously easier said than done. But when you don't feel like brushing your teeth, do it anyways and it should help you get over it.
