Dealing with Psychosis Stigma

While stigma towards psychosis is better than in the past, it is still very far from great. It feels to me like a secret I have to keep. Has anyone felt similarly and/or do you have any tips on dealing with this?

YES! It’s awful. You start talking about it and you lose credibility because, “Oh they’re just being paranoid because they’re sick.” People look at us through this lens that is created by a general lack of understanding. And no one understands because they don’t know what it’s like first hand, instead they’ve already created a narrative about our condition. The cruel irony is that, having those stigmatized underlying assumptions about psychosis is slightly paranoid in itself.

I completely understand!! I experience a lot of odd treatment from people once they find out I have psychosis. They tend to think I’m dangerous somehow.. 😥

It worries me that people hold their preconceived ideas of psychosis to themselves without asking us about things to evaluate their assumptions. In their eyes, I feel separated from credibility. Everything gets chalked up to my management of psychosis.
