Dealing with Misunderstanding of Depression and Anxiety

How do you deal with people not understanding your depression or anxiety? I tried talking to my mother about being depressed to the point of having suicidal thoughts but not suicidal actions and she exclaimed that I should “just do it” how can I explain respectfully what I’m feeling?

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s so difficult to feel invalidated and misunderstood. If you go to a therapist i definitely encourage you talking to both your therapist and your mom about doing a group session. Sometimes parents can have a hard time letting their kid feel emotions because they are scared that if they validate you, you will stay in that emotion forever. Having a therapist be a mediator can be a great way to establish boundaries and help your mom to understand how she can best support you. hope this helps!!

It doesn't sound like she's ready to be understanding about this, I know how much that sucks but it is not your fault. It's not about how you're saying it, it sounds like she doesn't want to hear you. You are not alone, I'm so sorry you're going through this.
