Dealing with Intrusive Thoughts: Seeking Advice

Hello, I'm Lilly. I have had intrusive thoughts since childhood. I was diagnosed with depression when I was in highschool but I have this feeling that I was diagnosed wrong. I will be seeing a therapist soon. Do you guys experience intrusive thoughts too? How do you handle them?

Hi!!! I used to have a bunch on obsessive, intrusive thoughts. I would stay up all night just worrying and obsessing. I dont remember what the remedy was but I rememeber how bad it was.

they sometimes just come out of nowhere and then I freak out. I've heard you're supposed to acknowledge them and then move, but I seem to have a very hard time doing that.

Intrusive thoughts is a lot of what my Ocd is. They can be really small or really scary & disturbing. I am on medication which helps of course. A short term remedy is distraction, keeping yourself busy. If you have triggers you can stay away from them but that is also rather short term. Your therapist should help a lot, just make sure to tell them everything, be open with them no matter how dark or scary your thoughts may seem.

Distraction is key for me. A major thing I use for distraction is familiar music/songs… pretty much when I know all of the words and say them either in my head or out loud. Another thing I’ve been doing for about a year now is listening to positive talk videos on YouTube. There are a ton out there. For me, the most calming and helpful are the ones on Jason Stephenson’s channels. (And as a bonus, I think I may have been brainwashed into liking myself more 😂)
