Dealing with Guilt in Mental Illness

How do you deal with guilt? I experience it with depression and mania and not being able to do certain things, when I have to cancel plans with friends or family due to symptoms, and mostly with my main caregiver (my partner who puts their life on hold sometimes to help take care of my needs, I feel like such a burden).

I grapple with shame often which I define as different than guilt but I think it helps to analyze yourself from an outside perspective, i.e if your partner had those symptoms and needed extra support, you know you love them & would be happy to provide said support. So imagine that's how they feel about your plights. Guilt and shame is never really easy in the realm of mental illness. Remember it's your brain tricking you for the most part.

I feel the exact same way. Today is my birthday and I'm overwhelmed with guilt. I'm depressed and haven't left my bed in days and everyone keeps asking me what I want to do and what I want and I feel guilty for not being able to give them an answer.

sometimes taking care of yourself is way more important, and the people wanting to celebrate with you I bet would just be happy you’re trying to not go insane (I say this with such respect and personal feelings lol) sometimes I have to shut the world out and be in my own bubble for a very long time before coming back out. And that’s okay, you matter more than the feelings of others. I hope you can find moments of just feeling semi-okay today on your birthday ❤️ you’re not alone in this. And honestly you have permission to turn your phone to silent and hide it away til later (if you need to respond maybe respond with a “I’m having my bday to myself today but we can celebrate another day” or something if you need.
