Dealing with Dental Phobia and Anxiety

I've been dealing with a severe Dental Phobia and anxiety for many years now. Had a lot of bad experiences with dentists as a child and adult. I have multiple problems with my teeth and pain. Any advice on how to deal with this?

Then I would suggest working on it in therapy

Thank you for your response. I have met with a few dentists in my town over the years. The dentist I am seeing now has been my doctor for 6 years now. When we first met we had a long conversation about my dental phobia and anxiety. After all this time I feel somewhat comfortable with him and his office and staff. The problem is not related to the people but that they are working on my teeth and mouth. Just going into the waiting room of any dental office, regular or specialty makes me scared. I've tried all kinds of coping skills and I use laughing gas for all treatments. I just want to make this fear and anxiety go way.

The next time that you are at a dental appointment explain them about your dental phobia and anxiety and explain bluntly what caused your phobia and ask if there is anything that they can do to help you do better. I know some clinics will put patients to sleep for their dental work because of how bad their fear is so they don't even have to think about it. Maybe it would be better if they explained what they are doing as they are doing it so you aren't worried about it. I would open the conversation up with them about how they could help you.
