Dealing with Chiari Malformation: Seeking Advice

I was diagnosed with a Chiari malformation today. My main symptoms are imbalance and occasionally issues with incontenence. I see a neurosurgeon tomorrow but I was curious about what your symptoms were, if you got it fixed, and if so was it worth it? I’ll of course see what my doctor has to say but I’d like to hear other experiences!

Try joining a chiari Facebook group, this question gets asked a lot on there. My symptoms were a pinched nerve in my neck. That’s it, some minor neck pain. I got a vp shunt placed in March of last year, it was worth it because my pain went away but most importantly my doctor told me I’d be dead if I hadn’t done the surgery so yes I think it was worth it

My most severe issues were severe headaches, brain fog, and short-term memory loss. The brain fog was completely cleared by my surgery, and the memory loss and headaches are significantly improved! Today is the 9 year anniversary of my decompression surgery.

Some symptoms I had: constant headache, depression, anxiety, numb and tingly arm and hand, losing control of hand, vision loss, double vision, loss of peripheral vision, numb and tingly feet, breathing trouble, foggy brain, probably more. I had a decompression and I’m very glad it did. I had no quality of life leading up to my diagnosis and surgery and now I have my life back.
