Dealing with Artist Block Due to Depression

I know this might be a bit different than other posts, but are there any other artists on here with depression? I have been in such a block for so long I just want to enjoy painting and not feel like I need to do it because i’m labeled an artist. So, does anyone have tips on dealing with artist block because of depression?

Sometimes when I'm depressed I use that to paint. I use oil paints so it might turn out differently for you but, I just let the emotion flow and don't really try to make anything specific even if it ends up being random lines and splotches of color on a canvas it makes me feel better and it usually turns out pretty cool. I also have one specific thing that I like to paint more then others (mines cthulu) so I'll take one body part for example and just paint that. Eyes are a common one people do a lot.

Hi! It’s hard to motivate yourself sometimes (I totally get it) but a rule of thumb that has helped me for a long time is to start small. Maybe instead of forcing yourself to create something big and complete, focus on small swatches. Set an alarm and treat it like a school assignment or work, and make something tiny at the time you told yourself to do it. I wish you the best of luck in making something that makes you happy!

I stopped calling myself an artist and communicating in the art community because I realized how much the label and being in the community stressed me out. I try to journal how I’m feeling and draw something I’m thinking about. Like in my journal I have how sad I was and drew the FNAF character Sun next to it because I simply like that character a lot

yeah my family is on me all the time like “when are you going to paint” “when was the last time you painted” but I just don’t have the motivation or creative process I used to. It sucks that I have to have a reference for anything I paint because I can’t get that creativity back
