Dealing with Anxiety Before TMJ Surgery

I have many fears about getting TMJ surgery. my anxiety fears I will feel too isolated and locked in the post op stage when the jaw is locked together with wire. Any suggestions on what may help?

Establish a nonverbal communication system with everyone who will be spending a lot of time with you during recovery now, before your surgery. also ask about getting a prescription for something like Ativan or Xanax that you can take to stop acute anxiety attacks, because those can become problematic when your jaw is wired shut. they can probably give you enough for at least a day or two, but talking to your doctor about it before you can't talk anymore may allow you to get a prescription to last you a week or two, or for as long as your jaw is wired shut

Personally, I never got surgery for TMJ. Flexeril, a muscle relaxer, and chiropractic care (yes, they can adjust your jaw) has helped a ton
