Delicate Flower, I really like that. To me, that's a little bit similar to the exercise of asking yourself "what size is this feeling? What color? Does it have a name?" For example, once in therapy my therapist asked me those questions when I told him I felt like I wasn't a good enough wife. The feeling was about the size of a jacket, blackish brown, and his name was Felix. This way we separate ourselves from our thoughts and label them, and I think that is usually the first step in getting past our feelings.

This will sound weird but sometimes I try to talk to the "thoughts." Like "hi, can you tell me more about why you feel this way." I usually get some insight about what's going on in my psyche. I read about it in a book called "No Bad Parts." This exercise has been really helpful for me.

It’s a muscle you have to work out rather than a switch to turn on. Loooots of meditation so you can be in the moment enough to catch the thoughts - notice them - then replace the thought. Affirmations and post it notes to yourself. Journal so you can catch your thought patterns

Lots of practice. I used to use a DBT app and it taught me some skills.
