Thanks ATrance, you are so very correct. My son, aged 45, has has Congestive Heart Failure for approximately 10 years. He is also diabetic and has CKD. He's had to be very careful, but has been hospitalized several times over the past 10 years. He has to pay special attention to his fluid intake.

Yea depending on your stage of kidney failure, that amount of water in a single day could send you into heart failure, other heart events possibly, and even a worse stage of kidney failure because of all the stress it puts on kidneys that are already at a disadvantaged.

I drink a fairly large amount of water and other fluids daily. Hydration is highly recommended unless water restriction is necessary. I've been "stable" with my CKD for about 10-12 years. I'm careful with my salt intake and I do snack occasionally, but I do so rarely. I also have lost 45 pounds over the past year. I'm type 2 diabetic and my A1C has been 6.8 for the past year and a half. Hydration is also highly recommended for diabetics.

I've been Stage 3 Kidney Failure since 2007. Then about 3 weeks ago I was told that I had a large mass on my left kidney. So last Tuesday, I had my left kidney removed along with the large mass. My doctor assured me that the chances were high that the mass was malignant, cancerous. But by removing my entire kidney, it had a high probability of no cancer remaining in my body. I most likely will not require chemo or radiation. But now I only have one kidney remaining. So far, it is working well and my blood tests and urine output is within normal limits. Has anyone else had this experience of one kidney and chronic kidney disease??

when i was in kidney failure/on dialysis i ate almost no sodium in my diet. no adding salt to anything and choosing foods that do not have added sodium. i never ate any processed foods and cooked everything myself. when i did go out to eat it was somewhere nice and i would ask for no salt on any of my food. most dialysis patients are restricted on water however i was not bc i never retained fluid. so i was allowed to drink as much as i wanted. it really depends on what stage of kidney failure you’re in.

I don’t know the exact amount of sodium. I don’t add any extra salt to my foods. I don’t eat out much at all and I eat frozen or fresh vegetables over canned. No chips or anything like that. I eat very little “junk food” or frozen meals because they contain a lot of sodium. I drink over a gallon of water a day. I bring a large insulated cup to work and put water in the fridge and drink all day. You don’t ever see me without water in my hand. My friends and family make little jokes about it but I crave water and stay thirsty. I also have Sjogren’s Syndrome and it dries me out.
