Struggling with COVID Anxiety and Work Pressure

I am struggling right now. My boyfriend is home with COVID like symptoms and I work in health care. I am also feeling really weak and tired and achy and chills and sneezing a lot and I am so scared of being out of work because I feel like I am out sick too much. I don’t want to die or get COVID and I am so anxious I am going to have to stay home and all of my coworkers and supervisor are going to be mad and it will look bad especially because I am trying to get a promotion right now for a position within the department that I really want. I also don’t want to let my coworkers down because I’m supposed to train someone tomorrow and I feel like a failure.

I’m a teacher and feel the same guilt when calling out sick. You need to take care of yourself though. At the very least get a Covid test. It would be a lot worse if you get other people sick with Covid especially little kids who can’t be vaccinated yet.

Hey there! I’ve felt this feeling myself. But I’m the end, you have to do whatever is best for you and those you care about. In this case, I believe it would be best for you to stay home and test until your symptoms stop. I understand how it is working in a hospital (which is why I’m at a clinic now!). You always feel obligated. But when it comes to you and your well being, and the potential well being of others, you need to listen to your gut and take the safe route!

Please understand that you staying home is looking out for your coworkers. You are helping to protect them, their family, and their friends, as well as your patients. Your coworkers will understand, and I’m sure most of them have had to take time off before. Try not to assume anyone else’s feelings, and put your health first. This isn’t going to be the deciding factor for who gets the promotion.

Thank you so much for sharing your kind words and experience. I know realistically we are in an unprecedented time and I am fully vaccinated as well and boosted and I am also afraid of spreading it to others so I’d rather isolate if I do have it, I just don’t want my professional life to suffer because of it. But you are right. Especially working in a hospital there is only so much I can do. I was working on the COVID unit of our hospital yesterday too so I wouldn’t be surprised if I do have it considering how quickly and easily omicron has been spreading like you mentioned. But again thank you so much. Your words grounded me and helped.

Hey, it’s not your fault. We are still in a pandemic and even though you feel like you don’t want to let anyone down, they will understand! Especially if you’re sick. You need to take care of yourself and protect others you work with. Omicron is spreading like crazy rn. You are not a failure. If you need to call off or go on a medical leave while you isolate, then that’s what you need to do. I Your job should understand, especially if it’s in healthcare. I’m so so sorry you are going through all of this. I went through similar feelings and a similar situation in October. I was worried about letting everyone down when I started getting sick with covid even though I was vaccinated. But ultimately, my job was very understanding and they gave me the time I needed to recover. I also felt better about not exposing others or getting anyone else sick. Everything is going to be okay. 💕
