Coping with ARFID: Seeking Advice

Does anyone else have ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder)? I’ve always known I’ve had issues with food, but never related to the more well known eating disorders (ie: anorexia, bulimia, etc) And if you do also experience this disorder: how you you cope?

YES! I’ve been struggling with it for a while. Food just doesn’t seem like food anymore. Here is what I’ve figured out so far. - make a list of safe foods (snacks and meal food or anything. Doesn’t have to be ‘healthy food’) - stay stocked up in those safe foods. - if your going to make a meal and start getting anxiety, take a small break and then return to making it. (I get bad anxiety when it’s time to eat) - eat while distracted. Watch a show or something you like to keep you from over focusing on the food. Also munching on snacks while you do other things is helpful too get in a bit of extra food. - have a water with you when you eat so if anything suddenly tastes bad you can take a gulp of water and wash it down and rinse your mouth. - remember it’s not your choice and it’s not your fault. Your not being picky. You are fighting a battle and are strong for doing so.

I see we are both autistic too! This is more common in people with autism. For me it’s the texture. Also COVID-19 messed up my sense of taste and now some things like chocolate are just not the same.

Thank you for the advice! I’ve been trying to do a lot of these ideas, I mostly have been having a hard time with the snacking tbh but I gotta go shopping and stock up!
