i think it depends on how open you want to be. you could say something along the lines of “ i’m really struggling with my mental health and i might seem a bit distracted/distant right now. or if you feel comfortable sharing more about your situation you could disclose your struggle with self harm and explain that you are distracted by self harm thoughts at the moment and thus might not be as engaged. people may get a bit upset but please remember that they are not upset at you and that you are allowed to struggle and be distracted due to mental health :)
