Eating for emotional gratification is not often helpful. Can be problematic... And can be an actual addiction. Just saying.
avatar

sandboxjoints

1y ago

true! it's important to not rely on it. i try to have things that will nourish my body, taste good & are easy to make especially after something that takes a lot of energy (exams, panic attacks, etc). my approach to "comfort food" is less trying to get emotional gratification and more trying to keep my body comfortable, healthy, and fed to have one less thing to worry about so i can focus on tackling other issues. :)
avatar

for many who are in dark spaces, eating something that brings you joy is extremely helpful. Many of us at times are chemically deficient in positive mood hormones like dopamine, and small pleasures like your favorite food can be significant in offering even momentary relief from psychological pain. Eating is not wrong or shameful. Many of us with disordered eating struggle with giving ourselves permission to eat and not judging ourselves for it. Addiction is not doing a lot of something. Addiction is being unable to stop doing something harmful, things that negatively affect your life and others. Learning to navigate the pain of mental illnesses is extremely difficult and can be very lonely. This post is about sharing with others what brings them joy during hard times, so maybe this isn’t the place to ‘just say’ anything that shames us for it

Choclate, mac n cheese, Mexican/Italian food. Stuff I need to be careful with and a double dose of auryxia also yes something non food, journaling, prayer and spending time with the Lord. Fruit and veggies help physically as well. Preferably high on probiotic. Sauer kraut, green beens, CHOCOLATE FROZEN YOGHURT call me crazy. I just prefer what I prefer. I love food, but being I'm also dealing spiritual warfare, intermitent fasting helps as well. So I don't need to really be stuffing my face. What really kicks it in the teeth is something with high vitamin b6 and b12 and nnatural b6 and b12 not thst synthetic JUNK that everybody sells and slaps NATURAL on. As a matter of fact I would recommend you discuss these nutritional items with your doctor or dietitian and be very careful with prescription ANYTHING.

chicken alfredo with steamed broccoli is one of my favorites. easy to make, delicious, and pretty well balanced. honestly just any combination of carbs + protein (usually chicken) + vegetables + sauce. sometimes it's a frozen meal if i really don't have the energy to do more than microwave something. then maybe a bit of ice cream or something if i still want any

watch me dox myself i guess, but i do alfredo like i grew up with - no judgement, but made with cream cheese and nutmeg in it - on cheese tortellini with peas and ham. it's absolutely terrible for me for several reasons but sometimes the short term pleasure is more important than the long term effects... i also really like the extreme chocolate moose tracks with frozen raspberries and nonpareils... also terrible for me, but yknow. see above. i don't think there's anything safe that's actually a comfort food for me, because i'm so particular about my favourites, so i tend to ignore my dietary restrictions pretty hard (and definitely to my own detriment, lol).

mashed potato! it’s one of those things that brings me a lot of comfort but in a different way to something like junk food where I tend to overdo it and feel bad afterwards. It’s enjoyable but actually comforting lol. It’s different to what I usually eat but I used to eat it as a kid. Now it’s my cold weather, feeling a bit rubbish little treat 😊
