Chronic Pain and Tattoos: Can They Coexist?

Does anyone with chronic pain and a fear of needles have tattoos? The nurse who did my labs today said I looked like a person who would have tattoos after I confirmed I didn't have any because I hate needles. I want them, but I'm nervous about getting them. Does chronic pain contribute to the discomfort of tattoos or make it easier because of a higher pain tolerance? The part of needles I hate most it's the pain, it's the foreign object in my muscle.

I was actually very afraid of needles *until* I started getting tattoos! Not sure if other folks have had the same experience. I started off small with a tiny hand tattoo, and it was honestly an entirely different sort of pain from something like IVs/injections, more like a scratch than a jab. I’ve gotten bigger pieces since, and it absolutely did hurt, but I think since getting the tattoos took time, it was sort of desensitising to the idea of needles? I definitely prefer the experience of getting tattooed to medical needles, but it definitely helped me handle all needles better 💕

I do! For me it was a completely different experience to getting an injection. Painful, but tolerable. My tattoos were on the side of my chest and inner wrist in case placement is something you're concerned about with pain, too. Good luck!
