Do I Need an Endoscopy for Celiac Diagnosis?

I recently got the celiac blood test back and it was positive. I was wondering if an endoscopy was absolutely necessary for diagnosis of celiac? I have a colonoscopy scheduled since my gi and I were not previously concerned about celiac and was trying to rule out chrons.

It’s not always needed- I didn’t have one as my blood work was enough to diagnose (ttg levels)

Endoscopy is needed for definite diagnosis of celiac as they take a biopsy of the stomach to check the villi (colonoscopy is not for diagnosing celiac). I’ve had celiac diagnosed for over 12 years.

The endoscopy is sometimes necessary for your insurance to cover treatments so if u can I would. It also can show severity and if anything else is going on.

I also wonder this! When I scheduled an endoscopy to confirm Celiac my out of pocket cost was going to be over $1000 so I didn’t do it. Now I don’t want to fool with eating gluten again (since you have to for the test) to be tested, but I want to know if the endoscopy is absolutely necessary

When I was diagnosed it was for both Crohns and Celiac. I believe the colonoscopy and endoscopy were how they identified the Crohns. I believe they treat them a little differently. But since I got them dx at the same time, I'm not 100% sure. Living now for 10 years with dx. For Celiac it took about 2 years to feel better, but it does come. Don't give up.
