Caffeine and Bipolar Disorder: Can You Drink Coffee While on Meds?

Does caffeine affect your meds or your bipolar disorder? My doctor suggested stopping coffee, but it keeps me awake from my night medication’s tranquilizer like effects.

Caffeine does trigger my mania if I don’t medicate (i use weed). I have very sensitive triggers though and youll see a spectrum of how things like caffiene and alcohol affect us. I have ADHD and didnt know caffeine could be used in a healthy way until after four years of a serious caffeine addiction that kept me primarily manic through college. If it doesnt seem to affect the person it might just be worth having a limit, maybe no more than one or two cups in a sitting or day as preventative measures, but if they are properly medicated a cup of coffee might not negatively affect them. I pay close attention to my moods when using coffee or other drinks to help my dopamine because sometimes I forget to smoke and end up hypomanic. Timing is also important as our circadian rhythms are jacked up. Its less triggering than alcohol and adderall so its really up to the persons biology.

I think you know your body best. Caffeine effects everyone differently even if you have the same disorders. I’m sure your doc is suggesting that more as a caution. For me, caffeine didn’t affect my bipolar, but stimulant meds for ADHD did. Adderall didn’t when I was also on mood stabilizers at the same time, but Vyvanse messed with my mood a lot even being on a mood stabilizer. Anyway, my point is, I’ve had complete success with just listening to my own body. It’s why I still smoke weed despite docs saying I “shouldn’t” bc I know for me it doesn’t affect my mental health. Do what you feel is best for you! Maybe give up caffeine and see how it goes. I’ve gone on and off caffeine so many times so if you quit you can always go back! i Hope this helps!!

I recently cut my caffeine intake by switching only to decaf coffee. I don’t drink anything else with caffeine. It didn’t effect my bipolar that much but I was tired all the time for a few weeks
