Tips for Battling Brain Fog

What is your favorite brain fog trick? I’m a graduate student and I struggle so much with my memory, with finding words and following a train of thought, and focusing. Writing papers has been especially challenging.

I don’t know. For me it got better when my situation changed. When school lets out I think you’ll be less stressed and doing better. Just baby steps until then! One of my favorite tricks is a cold shower it relaxes your nerves so you can think a little better, for me it helps me turn down being over hyped up about things.

unfortunately the cold is kinda dangerous for me I have a weird allergic reaction to sudden and or prolonged drops in temperature. I’m so ready for school to be over. I get to move home to my support system once I graduate. Friday term 4 ends and Saturday term 5 starts. Term 5 is the last one! I’m so close. But these finals are kicking my butt.

I take copious amounts of notes. Even things I've actively been thinking about for long periods of time. And I rewrite them sometimes (mostly out of boredom and low motivation) I also have been trying medicinal mushrooms (not the 🧙‍♀️ones lol) and so far it's helped? But that might be placebo? Supposedly it's supposed to take 3-4 weeks to show effects and I've used it for three days.

It’s so embarrassing lol yesterday I asking my husband to get my comb out of the car and I just kept saying “can you bring me the car out of the car” .. we laugh about it and then wait until I get the right word.. or he helps me out.. and then with the kids I’ve told them plenty of times to put something in the kitchen but I would say bathroom.. and they just use their common sense because they know certain things don’t go in the bathroom 🤣🤣… when I get information I was told he just tells me as if it’s the first time he’s telling me.. I try to stay in good spirits about it but it’s very frustrating.. and I’m rewatching “Grace & Frankie” on Netflix and I’m enjoying it.. I know I’ve seen all of the seasons but hell I can’t remember all of what happen sooo 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’m also rewatching grace and Frankie because I don’t remember any of it, that’s so funny! I like to think it’s a superpower that we get to rewatch all these shows like it’s the first time again haha

When I’m having a tough time with writing papers I usually ask someone to help me. I forget things as soon as I say them and lose my train of thought easily, so I ask someone to help by typing up what I say. After a little bit, I go through it and flush it out to finish it. If I can’t get someone to help, then sometimes I record myself talking about the topic and type it up while playing it back. Hope this can help!

thank you for the suggestion! I don’t have anyone to help me type (I live alone just me and my puppy and my friends are all out of state) but I will def try to record myself and see if that helps

Brain fog sucks. I have memory issues too, but on the bright side I get to experience my favorite tv shows/movies like they are brand new. Another cool thing (sarcasm!) is how bad brain fog makes me a completely different person with my temperament and patience so I basically have meltdowns. Most people are understanding of the situation, but I Still hate it

I have moments where I get irrationally frustrated and never thought it could be coinciding with my brain fog I’ll have to try and pay more attention and see what I notice

Commenting so I see what others say! I’m also a student and my only solution so far has been to be part time
