Has anyone else here gotten braces as treatment for their EDS/TMJ issues? I have a consultation for them because of how painful it is to eat, I’m hoping it helps correct my jaw

I’ve recently been diagnosed with TMJD and EDS. Only just been told how dire a situation my jaw and teeth are in so I’ve been told I should think about Invisalign. Im waiting for mine to come back

Do braces help with TMJ? I've been doing acupuncture to help with my TMJ and it's helped quite a bit. Night guards make my jaw lock up more

@Bird1620 I’ve been told and seen online that braces help TMJ a lot

I had braces for 3 years my TMJ is severe. I don't recommend it simply bc I got severe root resorption from my teeth moving too quickly eventually I'll need a bridge.

I have severe Tmj but no one has told me braces would help it

Dentists tell me that braces won't help me like normal ppl because with eds even if my teeth are corrected they are more prone to falling out of place or continually moving after its done. I have teeth that have moved with no dental interaction too. Connective tissue is what holds your teeth to your gums and with faulty connective tissue due to the ends, im just prone to a bad mouth with expensive procedures. One had teeth just straight up pulled and didn't continue with like a bridge or something because it was too costly after insurance. And now I have no insurance (and no job) and a badly broken tooth that im eating otc pain/anti inflammatory multiple times a day because its painful and cannot see a dentist due to cost. Medicaid (once I get it) is hard to use for adult dental stuff, since even the community health centers around me that take Medicaid only do dental stuff for under 18yrs old and im 30.

@InsidiousAnomaly I’m really sorry to hear you’re struggling so hard with getting treatment on your teeth/jaw, that sounds painful and awful and you deserve some relief! My insurance technically doesn’t cover this, but they said they probably do, due to this being a genetic issue and therefore corrective surgery

@kasket if I could get it covered I would rather just get my whole mouth pulled and have full implants/permanent dentures. I've literally had teeth pulled vs a root canal because it was cheaper after insurance.

It’s painful for me to eat and brush my teeth as well but I’m afraid my insurance won’t cover it. Did yours make an exception because of how bad it is? Or do you have to pay on your own or some other way?

@Rowboat Honestly the answer to this is up in the air right now. I was told that they would die to this being a genetic issue, however my insurance still hasn’t received the request from my doctor and my orthodontist even after multiple months. My doctor thinks that once we do the consultation they’ll suddenly find the letter of recommendation, if that makes sense

Yup I already had braces as a kid, but need to get Invisalign now bc I’ve shifted my jaw again. I’ve been told I grind my teeth every night, and you can tell with how jagged my bite has become. I definitely have hEDS but not sure about TMJ…

@Future_Dr._Zebra My dentist also told me I must be grinding my teeth in my sleep but I literally don’t, I drool all night with my mouth wide open (I asked people to watch me) So I wonder if that’s common with hEDS for some reason for our jaw to affect our teeth like that?

I’ve been wondering about this as well. My TMJ has been driving me crazy lately

@Wanderinglumos If anything I’ll be updating here after I get it done! My initial consultation is on the 14th
