There are nine diagnostic criteria for BPD. If you have five or more of the nine you can be diagnosed with BPD. Of course, a formal diagnosis is definitely best for personality disorders (which are typically not diagnosed before the age of eighteen in the United States), however, I know that's not always accessible to everyone, and finding a professional that is accessible, will believe you, will diagnose you, and will treat you, isn't always easy.
