Seeking Better Treatment for Fibromyalgia

I have been on gabapentin for several years. My pain is getting worse and the medication has been altered several times with little improvement. I have an appointment to see a rheumatologist soon because I am wondering if I have something else besides fibromyalgia. Has anyone found better treatment with a rheumatologist?

I went to a rheumatologist and I was put on Sulfasalazine and it was a miracle drug… but I lost my insurance and haven’t been able to get back on it

@SexyLady… I think it’s most helpful and supportive here that we share anything that helps us while recognizing it may not work for everyone. Or even be accessible. The closest Integrative Medicine clinic is over 7 hours round trip for me.

I have a few thoughts! sometimes people need to increase their gabapentin dosage over time not cuz it’s addictive or anything that’s just how it gets metabolized I’ve heard. Also, cannabis is huge for me! It helps both with sleep and fibro pain in my experience. And then there’s cymbalta (and other SNRIs) which can help with mood, energy, and/or fibro pain depending on the person. Personally, I manage fibro w a neurologist but I know people who manage it with rheum as well so that could be a great option.

A good rheumatologist, yes! First thing mine did is switch me to Lyrica, so much better than gabapentin. I second what Lorita said about Cannibis. But rheum should do a deep dive for any autoimmune illness like RA.

I started Cannabis and it’s a lot better. It took me a long time to convince my doc …. It helps me mostly in the evenings because than I feel the burden of my weight and daily exercise…

My rheumatologist gave me Gabapentin as well. It didn’t do anything for me so I stopped it. She did do tons of blood work and now suspects I have rheumatoid arthritis. It wouldn’t hurt to see a specialist in my opinion. Best of luck!
