Want to avoid blood transfusions which seem to be recommended every few months. How can I naturally increase my iron?

i get iron infusions (venofer) once a year, weekly for 5 weeks. i don’t absorb iron through my gut, but this keeps my levels steady. has your doc tried this instead of waiting for it to be so bad that you need blood? that sounds awful to go through so often.

You can try eating foods high in iron and taking your iron supplements with some form of citrus which helps your body to absorb things better. Sometimes your body just can’t absorb and maintain enough iron and infusions end up being necessary

Broccoli, red meats, limit dairy. Dairy can block the gut from absorbing iron.
