hey can people with autism be just as smart as normal kids because sometimes people make me feel dumb because I'm different but I just learn differently

It's always interesting to me what skills people think indicate intelligence that have nothing to o with each other. I own a business and have 2 degrees, I can't tie my shoes or remember to eat.

Yes! Allot of people with ASD actually put allot neurotypical to shame if you just look at sheer brain power. Typically pattern recognition math science and history are all strong points if you can get engaged

autistic people are actually usually much better at critical thinking and creative problem solving! I always felt bad in school because I didn't know I was autistic, but I did know I was different somehow and that that gave me an advantage in a classroom setting. found out after graduating high school I have autism spectrum disorder and savant syndrome and suddenly my entire public school career made a LOT of sense

@wise i found out after my masters degree I was autistic. I learned I was also 'twice exceptional' and it made all of my schooling make sense

@SunInAugust it was especially hilarious because I still have to be reminded not to rotate a pan in the oven with my bare hands. I never remember to drink literally anything, it doesn't even have to be water, just SOMETHING for my body to run on. but if I had math or music in front of me suddenly I'm one of those nonverbal prodigies in a movie directed by the a man with a savior complex. medical textbooks are my first choice for recreational reading. I got lost in my hoodie this morning because I couldn't find the head hole once I was in it and kept trying to shove my head through a sleeve. I only seem smart because I was lucky enough to have acceptable special interests that hold potential for productivity. if I had spent my entire childhood hyperfocused on something like traditional art or a specific cartoon, I probably would've had a much harder time in school and been labelled "learning disabled" šŸ™„

God do I ever relate. Yes. Austism doesn't mean you have any particular IQ. It might mean you have some learning disabilities or different processing speeds but it may mean you have superior pattern recognition or higher IQs too. Differently means just that. Different. Not stupid.
