Struggling with Depression and Anxiety: Could it be Autism?

I’ve struggled with depression, anxiety (esp. social) and feeling chronically out of place in the world for pretty much as long as I can remember. I recently read a lot about “high-functioning” autism and I broke down in tears because it described the way I’ve been my whole life. me so perfectly. I intend to ask my doctor for a referral when I see her, so I can get screened a Dan hopefully find something to help me. Has anyone else been through this type of thing?

I'm in the same boat as you right now. I feel like there's a lot more going on than what they decided it was!

Yes I have! I will say though most people in the autistic community find “high functioning” labels hurtful. Autism is a spectrum and each individual has their own strengths and challenges. Finding out I am autistic was such a relief and wonderful feeling!

@unluckyunicorn thanks! “High-functioning” was used a lot in the things I read, but I also I saw mixed feelings on the term and I could definitely see why it would be troublesome. I don’t think I’d like it much myself. I hope my usage didn’t seem demeaning.

MultiMato, not at all! I understand why you used it. I just wanted you to be aware of the usage. Some people truly have no idea how hurtful it can be and wanted to raise that awareness just to be informative. I hope the screening process goes well for you!

Yes, me too. I didn’t realize I may be high-functioning until my oldest daughter was diagnosed as that, then I started to put the pieces together.
