Hi. I have Asperger‘s and want to be a teacher. That’s alright, right? I’ve had people tell me it’s selfish or inhumane but I can function at a pretty high level now.

I have Aspergers and I am a teacher! I teach middle school math, 6th grade honors, Gen Ed, and EC kiddos. There's pros and cons. I'll admit, I didn't exactly made it well known that I'm on the spectrum until after I was hired. That gave them a chance to know ME and see ME not a diagnoses. There's been some challenges for sure. I do think it would be easier if I didn't have Aspergers but I still made it! We always need more teachers and the more diverse the teachers, the more the student will respond positively. Go you! You got this!💕

It will probably make you a better teacher since you understand the perspectives of your neurodivergent students

I'm going to be honest with you: you're going to have a really hard time convincing people with more experience in the profession that you belong there if you don't fit the expected happy perky talkative smiley personality type. You will have to fight uphill against mentors and professors who tell you to reconsider your career path. On another note I think you would benefit from deconstructing some of your internalized ableism around functioning labels. Just a suggestion.
