Dealing with Anxiety: To Take or Not to Take Medication?

I have struggled with anxiety for a long time. It comes in waves where I feel that I can manage but sometimes it’s overwhelming and I know I need to do something. I have been prescribed Zoloft but have never taken it. I am scared it will make me feel worse. I have heard that sometimes it will get worse before it will get better. I am also scared of it not working for me or having other side effects such as low sex drive (which I already have) or not feeling like myself.

One good thing about these types of medications is that it takes time to build up in your bloodstream. It takes 2-3 weeks to build up to a therapeutic level. Any changes positive or negative will generally happen slowly and increase with time. Everybody responds differently to different drugs and there's so many options that work completely different. If one doesn't work well, you can come off and try something else. It can be a bit of trial and error but try not to be patient and not get discouraged.
