Weight Gain on Antidepressants: Any Alternatives?

Anyone notice weight gain on lexapro? Are there any antidepressants (not wellbutrin) that do not cause 20+ pound weight gain?

I know this is an old post but will quickly chime in. Everyone is different ultimately. Personally have a huge reduction in appetite throughout the year I’ve taken it this far, and hence some weight loss. Was hugely reducing meals at first but is a bit more settled Antidepressants in themselves don’t cause physiological or metabolic changes to induce this, it’s about amount of food consumed vs activity levels, which can be impacted by these meds. Anyway, original point was.. quite a few folks notice weight gain, been the opposite for me. No point in relying on anecdotes, everyone’s different. What you can do is talk to your doctor about SSRIs LESS likely (statistically) to result in weight gain based on research and their experience, or you can find this out for yourself and request a switch 👍 best of luck folks

Forgot to add that yes certain meds might be LESS LIKELY to result in weight gain (appetite increase), but still may all the same.. our bodies are strange indeed. I’ve been on Zoloft (Sertraline) and found it very similar to Lexapro in every way, but others will have different experiences. If it’s at the point where the perceived benefits are outweighed by side effects like this one, it’s worth discussing for a potential switch. If you feel that perhaps the increased appetite can be managed by e.g increasing fibre and protein intake, counting calories, staying distracted then that’s an option

Zoloft took away almost all of my appetite and results in some pretty extreme nausia.

I agree. Zoloft is the only one that didn’t have that effect but now I have no sex drive. Always a Trade off unfortunately

Zoloft seems to be a good one.
