Hey, do antidepressants actually help? I know that sounds like a stupid question. But I've never really been keen on trying medication for mental issues because I'm the only one among my siblings who hasn't tried it yet, and I've heard there are a lot of side effects. But I have a university deadline for a big project in a few weeks, and I can barely do anything except lie in bed during one of the worst depressive episodes I've had. It's lasted two weeks so far without a sign of stopping, and I don't know what to do because I don't want to apply for an extension again. Thanks for reading <3

Short answer, yes they work and yes they have side effects. I normally get nauseous for the first two weeks at starting a new one, but that's why they start you on a low dose. I'm what's called treatment resistant, which means my symptoms persist through multiple medications, but even I notice a considerable difference when on vs off them, even if they don't make me "normal." I've been where you are both in emotional and school terms, and I would suggest you give it a try. They dont have to be longterm if you don't like it. And it may take a bit to fully work, but I think you'll feel better.
