Alternative Treatments for Substance Use Disorder

The first step that is most helpful for longterm recovery is to go to a detox and treatment center/sober house. Afterwards, 12 step programs, therapy, religion (that’s what worked for me when nothing else did), having support systems in place, finding something healthy to become “addicted” to (like exercise or yoga or painting). Keep going! Methadone isn’t going to treat alcoholism. Buy and reusable water bottle and keep it on hand. Every time you feel like you want to use take a deep breathe and then focus on breathing

I suffer from alcohol use disorder. I’m in a 12 step program, and seeing a shrink for cognitive behavioral treatment. I’m only at the beginning, so I can’t see how I’m doing yet…
