Can I Drink Alcohol While Taking Venlafaxine?

the internet has not been very helpful with this, I haven't been able to find any realistic info. does anyone on venlafaxine know if it's generally okay to have a drink or two? I don't drink often, maybe once every 3 months or so. but when I googled interactions it was very vague and only gave me the worst case scenario outcomes. alcohol is not very important to me so it wouldn't be a big deal if I couldn't drink on my medication, but I'd like to know

No, do not drink and take Venlafaxine. It's an antidepressant and anxiety medicine.

I'm on effexor and drink relatively frequently (~1 drink a day, although I'm trying to drink less) and it hasn't killed me yet. I think effexor just decreases the speed at which your body metabolizes alcohol, so you need to be more careful drinking, as it will take fewer drinks to get your BAC to dangerous levels. But one or two drinks at a time should be fine

I've been told venlafaxine basically just increases the negative side effects of drinking, like dizziness, but isn't dangerous. It seems like it's totally okay to have small amounts as long as you're careful, listen to your body, and have safe people around (which I would argue is good advice for anyone drinking). You're probably fine.

From personal experience drinking socially while on Venlafaxine, I haven't experienced any side effects and agree that you'll be fine with the occasional drink or two. Be safe and sensible and have fun 🍻
