I claim this tip as purely my own... I noticed that my mind would easily spiral into negative thoughts when I was doing rather mundane things, like driving, doing dishes, and babysitting...so I figured what I needed was to memorize a song that 1- the words were in a different language (so as not to be distracting or remind me of anything other than the sounds they made, or to leave any room to attach the word to any of the negative spiral ish thoughts) 2- was repetitive and upbeat so I could memorize it easily 3- was definitely not something I had to pick up a device to access because phones are distracting. I chant/sing to Sam Garrett's songs. Whenever I find myself wishing that my mind had a power off button..I get some of my favorite songs of his going in my head. This is now my mode for "nothing". The reality is, I'm never thinking nothing. So I just give my mind something to do. Sam Garrett songs are like my mental fidget toys.
