It’s not surprising that trying to radically modify behaviour and thought patterns in adulthood is incredibly difficult, especially when many of these develop as coping / defence mechanisms and ‘crutches’ to survive in a society that overwhelmingly favours neurotypical preferences. I can’t take medication at the moment because late diagnosis and the stress of not being diagnosed (and misdiagnosed as ‘depressed’ at 19) means I’m overweight with high blood pressure. I’ve been told to lose weight and lower cholesterol and blood pressure first! I’m finding it’s helpful to also assertively seek to modify and set constraints on the demands and intrusion of others on me, and making conscious decisions about the environments I put myself in, the way I engage with people and the schedule I keep.
