I get very anxious when it comes to driving. It’s gotten to the point where I no longer cross 2 way streets or busy intersections. Everyone says the only way to cope with it is to drive more. But when I drove more, I became more afraid. What can I do to cope? I’ve tried self-soothing and it no longer works.

Unfortunately, it’s just something you’ll most likely have to do even though it’s uncomfortable. I learned that as we continue to do the things that make us anxious/panic that our brain eventually accepts these things as something we’ve done before and is not a threat. so eventually it will be way easier!! stick with it!!!

I had my license for 9 years before driving. Just got in the car one day and drove to work. Had to force myself to do something I wasn’t comfortable with until I became comfortable with it
@Bumblezzz I see what you’re saying. Thank you!
For me, it helps having a safe person in the car with me. Someone who can help me remember to breathe and reassure me. Listening to music or a story or podcast also helps me. Plus, having directions pulled up and visible without having to look down helps me too.
@wheezynwavy thank you! I’ll be sure to try it!
I have that problem too. I honestly am not sure how to deal with it either, i haven't driven for like three months now. My therapist told me to take it slow and easy - just drive around the neighborhood a bunch of times, and then drive on side roads, etc. I haven't worked up to even that yet but it sounds like solid enough advice.
@Ez if it helps, I believe you can do it. There was about a month where I felt like I was too scared to drive or leave my house and it took me driving little bit by bit around my block until I felt comfortable enough to drive on the main roads. It’s possible, but you have to schedule when you’re gonna do it so you can hold yourself accountable.
