The tinea corporis rash is caused by a fungus. There is usually a circular, itchy rash in the middle with clearer skin around the edges. The appearance of ringworm gives it its name. Worms are not involved.
There are three types of ringworm on the body: athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis). It is usually spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal.
This group contains additional names:

You can treat the affected skin with prescription-strength antifungal medications, such as lotions, creams, and ointments. Your doctor might prescribe antifungal pills if your infection is particularly severe or extensive.
