What is it?
orchitis is an inflammation of the testes. Epididymitis is an inflammation of the epididymis, a curved structure at the back of the testicle that stores and carries sperm. Orchitis and epididymitis are commonly present together.
The most common cause for orchitis and/or epididymitis is viral or bacterial infection.

Signs & symptoms
symptoms may include:
* low-grade fever
* pain and tenderness in the testicles
* redness and warmth in the scrotum
* enlarged lymph nodes in the groin
* pain during sexual intercourse and ejaculation
* pain during urination
* abnormal penile discharge
* blood in the semen
Diagnosis
diagnosis is based on:
* physical examination – your doctor will look for signs of orchitis or epididymitis such as swelling, redness and tenderness in your scrotum.
* If there is abnormal penile discharge your doctor may use a cotton swab to collect a sample and test for Sexually transmitted infections.
* Blood and urine tests to look for an infection
* testicular ultrasound – may be used to rule out other possible diagnoses
Treatment
reatment usually involves:
* treating the underlying infection with antibiotics (in cases of bacterial infection)
* easing symptoms with pain killers, anti-inflammatory medications, bed-rest, elevating the scrotum and applying cold compresses.
