This group contains additional names: - Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), also known as prostate gland enlargement, is a common condition seen in older men. The urethra, which transports the urine from the bladder to the penis, passes through the prostate. Men who suffer from BPH tend to have urinary symptoms such as urgent and frequent urination as well as difficulty to urinate. The prostate continues to grow throughout a man’s life, and if it’s large enough it causes urinary symptoms.
27 people with Hyperplasia of Prostate are on Alike.
Symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia may include frequency and urgency in urination, night urination, difficulty starting urination, weak urine stream, a stream the stops and starts, dribbling at the end of urination and inability to completely empty the bladder.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia diagnosis is based upon medical history, physical examination including a rectal exam to check for enlargement. Urine test may help rule out other causes for urinary problems. Blood tests for PSA marker levels may be done as well, as it is a marker for prostate enlargement. Other tests may include urinary flow test, postvoid residual volume test, a24 hour voiding diary, transrectal US and a prostate biopsy.
Treatment for BPH depends on the prostate size, the patient’s age, overall health and the severity of the symptoms. There are medications that help relax the bladder neck muscle (alpha blockers), shrink the prostate (5-alpha reduate inhibitors) and Tadalafil. Sometimes, surgical procedures may be done such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), laser therapy, prostatic urethral lift, embolization of blood supply and more.
