I just started emdr and my symptoms are on full blast. More flashbacks, more anxiety attacks, nightmares and just stronger negative self image. What gives? Anyone else had this experience or is my brain not ready for emdr?

Hang in there. I’ve been doing EMDR for 6 months for complex PTSD. It’s working but it has revealed deep insecurities, lie based shame, fragile identity. The process is painful at times, but the results of new clarity and freedom are worth the work. Sometimes there’s quicker breakthrough where some areas I’ve seen stuck in are taking more time. I keep my counselor informed.

you can always let your therapist know when something isn’t working - or you don’t like what they are doing!! 🤗

Yes, therapists who are well-trained in EMDR pay attention to how it is impacting the client. If client struggles with dissociation (or has a major increase in symptoms), they are supposed to go *much* slower - & do more “resource” work with you (building up calming/self-soothing/switching to happy memories skills before addressing more traumatic memory).

Bandersnail, I’ve been working with this therapist on my cptsd for 4 years and we just started working on emdr. I also do a lot of ifs work and love ifs. It helps me a lot and my therapist combines it with emdr…I’m sorry they went too fast into it for you my therapist refused to do it with me until it seemed I was ready.

Angel, emdr is eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. It’s a way of helping the brain reprocess what happened to you!

I had the same experience, my new therapist says it's because my old therapist was trying to move too quickly with it, but personally I don't want to try it again. Been going DBT and Internal Family Systems therapy which has helped for me more than EMDR.

I was the same way when I first started EMDR. I even ended up in the hospital because they got that bad. Just be honest about how you are feeling with your therapist
