I'm having a lot of trouble lately with severe depression and picking my skin. trying to find a specialist with the skin picking is a real task and I've been feeling discouraged. any advice?

I have been doing this too. I either pick my lip obsessively, or pull my hair. The only thing that helps me is when I’m so busy I don’t have time to and especially if I’m typing a lot helps. I did buy this thing called a Pick Palette on Etsy which is fun to play with and relieves it a bit. I use it when I watch tv sometimes.

@Emerald_star that Pick Palette looks really cool. I always thought it was silly, but a little fidget toy can go a long way if you remember to keep it around

I have tried to understand why I've been doing it but I always end up with a different answer unfortunately. There are certain times when I do it more than other times, typically anxiety seems to be what triggers it. I only stop when I have told myself a million times to, or if my partner catches me and gently pulls my hand away

@LexaPeach91 Okay, so you have come up w multiple answers as to why you do it. Anxiety is a common trigger you've noticed. And you stop when you notice and tell yourself repeatedly to stop (to say the least it seems) or when your partner notices and pulls your hand away. That is a really good start. From there I'd ask, where and when or in what situations do you end up feeling anxious enough to start picking at your skin? Is there a pattern based on your work routine or daily living?

@Aneuka hmmm. Typically when I'm sitting on my couch not doing anything, every time I go to the bathroom, and when I'm laying in bed. It happens if I can see the scabs, if I'm bored or my hands aren't doing anything and when I'm anxious.

I recommend trying to understand why you're doing it. What is triggering the skin picking? Does it happen at certain times? Any time more than others? Any emotions attached to triggering it? What gets you to stop or when do you stop?
