Hey, just joined this community and was wondering if anyone has any tips for suffering with chronic pain and how to help people better understand what we are going through?

@FreyaB got it, sadly I don’t think the treatment that helped me is available there, I did ketamine injections. But lyrica (pregablin) was also pretty great! It did make me gain a lot of weight but the pain relief was amazing. I hope the spoon theory is helpful, good luck! :)

Welcome! Where are you located? I have some treatments that really helped my chronic pain but they aren’t available everywhere sadly. As far as talking to people about it, I really have no clue, I struggle with that too! It sucks. Spoon theory does tend to help though! Best of luck!

@Belugabear hey! I'm located in the south of england. I'll definitely have to try the spoon theory when speaking with my family. Hopefully it'll help them to understand.

It's difficult for people to understand without experiencing it and unfortunately part of it is accepting they won't fully get it. But if they've broken a bone or strained a muscle recently, you can always explain using that. Like imagine that pain, all over/in multiple parts of the body, all the time. It gives people a comparison they have experienced which can help.

@AutumnCoffee thank you so much, this is a great idea and I might have to try it when talking with my mum

In order to deal with chronic pain, I feel it’s important to have a good support system both medical and personal. I have a great primary care provider who understands fibromyalgia, as well as a great pain management physician. As for the personal side, you have to surround yourself with people that will listen. Educate your friends and family on what chronic pain means to you (how it limits you, what makes it worse and what makes it better).
