Can anyone else relate to this? I've been growing more and more annoyed that disabilities are becoming "asthetics". Conditions like Autism, BPD, ADHD, and others are becoming "asthetics" and now when I tell someone I'm autistic, they just respond with something like "lol mood" instead if taking my condition seriously, this has lead to a lot of misunderstandings/miscommunications/Sensory overloads and panic attacks because less and less people, at leaste that I've seen, aren't taking my condition seriously.

@willownyx I agree with everything you said. It is very frustrating having struggles that people now joke about or fund trendy. They really only pick out the parts of these disorders that seem fun which is even more frustrating. Personally I'm at a place where I've talked to some doctors about testing for ASD, but unfortunately because of the media bullshit I feel stupid for even thinking it. I've done extensive research. I'm not the type of person to fund it quirky or cute because half the time I feel like I'm drowning. My purpose in looking for answers is because I want help. I hope this little rant made sense but fully agree with media blowing things up in a disrespectful manner.

I've also had instances where my symptoms, primarily my sensory issues/meltdowns would occur and theu would ask "what's wrong with you?" "What's the matter it's just [insert noise here]" or that I was playing something up because they don't understand the ins and outs of these conditions, the same conditions I explained I had and they didn't take seriously at all

I totally get this. I’m not diagnosed with autism and my boyfriend actually made me add it to this profile because he told me that I have a lot of Autistic traits that really shine through especially when I’m stressed or sad (he grew up with an autistic father). Not only that but being diagnosed with DID and POTs was the hardest moments of my life to deal with and people are taking them as cute quirky badges to wear when it’s convenient and I have to deal with it alone by myself when it’s 12 am. Like disorders aren’t fun and quirky they are hard and anyone who deals with them are strong. But you dont get to take the seriousness out of someone’s disorder. Like at all.

it's definitely become something a lot of people idolise. maybe because of more awareness appears and maybe certain people talk about a condition and it gets a lot of attention, people self diagnose based on that attention or treat it as less serious as it is. so many people I know use disorders as adjectives or things like that?? like saying "everyone's a little autistic" or "you're acting so bipolar/OCD/ADHD" etc etc and it's just offensive to people who genuinely have a condition they struggle with and are struggling to get support for, and then there's tiktok and insta and all of that making things escalated. if you ever need to get anything off your chest feel free to message me any time, I totally understand how you're feeling :)

Same here! I have bipolar and there a literally so many people on tiktok and insta and even people I know personally who are like "im so manic rn! 🤪" and its infuriating cuz they 1. Have no idea what true mania is actually like and how dibilitating it be for people who actually experience it and 2. How in validating and hurtful it is to hear people who haven't been diagnosed with it act like mania is this happy fun time where you're doing silly things with your friends because then when they see real mania they don't like what they see. I told someone from highschool that I had bipolar and she was like omg I think im bipolar too just because she would get hyper every once in a while but when I was going through my first manic episode and I knew her she called me crazy and told me that I needed help I hate how mental health has become trendy and no one ever talks about mental illness in an equal light

Yeah it's frustrating when people self diagnose BPD. It seems to invalidate those of us who really do. I moved and am trying to get services in my new place and the guy that did the intake thought I was making it up that I have BPD because so many people say they have it. It was a fight to get it included in my diagnosis. I was diagnosed about 10 years ago by a psychiatrist that specialized in personality disorders.

I understand this but that autism thing isn’t new. They’ve ALWAYS acted like that about it

@Sydie_Bear I remember like years ago before it was like on tiktok blowing up and my sister would tell people and she would get the same kinda comments about it 😭 or a lot more people assuming she was just making a joke about being dumb! I’m taking the win that at least they don’t think I’m joking about being dumb anymore most of the time 🥴

Absolutely!! When I was growing up I felt so terrified because only my doctors and family knew that I had "an illness" took years and years to figure out it was BPD. Only to now have people loosely self-diagnose over one or two qualities (that most people feel in certain situations). It feels like there are a billion people now who believe they have the same diagnosis as me, without having any of the problems. SH, addiction, difficulty maintaining relationships, all of it comes at a cost and it is so infuriating and invalidating.

@runawayren I've seen a lot of the self diagnosises too! Espcially people saying they have a personality disorder because they have only about 1 symptom if any symptoms at all, and I use the word "symptom" very loosly because from what I've seen it's just something that has been very watered down so much that it can be applicable to anyone really
