So I (19) was diagnosed with T1 diabetes about a month ago, and then this week I caught COVID whilst on a trip. I heard that sickness affects blood sugar, but my highs and lows this week have been insane and it's having adverse effects on my mental health, mainly my anxiety. Every time I eat I spike up to close to 400, then it takes about 2 hours to come down with the insulin, at which point I go extremely low. It's an exhausting cycle of feeling terrible all the time and I'm sick to death of it after only a few days. Any advice on how to better regulate blood sugar whilst ill?

grains, protein, and fiber are great for balancing out high sugar. my mum is a type 1 too. anything whole wheat or high in protein is a good choice. whole wheat crackers or toast with your favorite nut butter would make an excellent snack, and it's easy to keep down when you're sick <3

My little brother has T1D and has since he was six, so about ten years. The recommendation above for protein and the Body Armour is great!!! Always helps him. Also lots of water (I know it's what everyone says, but it's really important for people with T1D). I'm 19 too and am really worried about my pancreas crapping out soon since my brother has it and I have autoimmune thyroiditis already. Good luck, if you need to vent, please feel free to reach out!!!! Stay safe!!!!

Aww! You're about my little brother's age. It seems like theres no protein like nuts or meat to balance out the blood sugar when it spikes. My little brother is a Type 1 diabetic and dad's a type 2. Between the two of them, mom and dad taught me how to take care of my little brother since I was only 3 and a half years older. As far as what reduces the anxiety while sick, gum is my other alternative besides medicine. Welcome to ask for more tips. I know that I get the drops too ,but haven't been a Hypoglycemic. It's confusing to figure out ,but I noticed limiting caffeine and increasing my water has really helped both. I can't have a Frappe because it made me even jittery. Milkshakes are a happy medium as I get my sugary drink and milk points. I have such a sweet tooth ,but that's ok.

@Hannah_6 🙏🙏 Thanks for the advice, can't have meat but I love me some nuts. I didn't know protein balanced out sugar, that's helpful to know. It's my first time being sick since my diagnosis, so my parents and I are a little out of our depth with the side-effects of the combo.

@FiFlag water and I would also try Body Armor. I recommended them to my dad since we have potassium issues. Sports drinks and sodas have too much High fructose Corn syrup aka Liquid sugar. Those spike your blood sugar too ,so you gotta be careful. Welcome to ask advice in my Messages box. I gotta work soon.
