Does anyone have any suggestions for feeling motivated enough to take care of grooming habits? I get really behind on brushing my teeth + showering and I want to try to stay motivated + remember to do so. Hope this makes sense!

Personally I feel gross and uncomfortable when I don’t do those things…but my wife is the opposite like you and will put off showering several days. She put up a paper calendar and put a sticker on the day when she’d shower, that way she’d remember how long ago so it would not be too long

I HATE showering. It’s a sensory nightmare for me. So I’m trying to find ways to make it more please. I put in a space heater, I burn my fave incense and listen to my face playlist, shower steamers and thc. I also hate brushing my teeth. Sometimes I go all weekend without brushing. So I got an electric toothbrush. So I’m at least vigorously brushing my teeth 5 times a week.

Buying products that make you want to shower! Like peppermint soaps and hemp scrubs, new loofah.. a new shampoo that's more natural! This used to help me shower more when I was really sad.. they called it shopping therapy BUT it was more motivational and it did not cost much 💕

I have had a similar to experience to gettingonmynerves- I need to figure out what the actual problem is. last year I was having a hard time showering bc I have really dry skin and couldn't shower and moisturize on the same day. when I started having my boyfriend moisturize my legs for me it helped a lot. also just having people ask how much grooming I had done helped me to just do it

i think the best hacks are slow steps… can’t take a whole shower? get some dry shampoo, or some moist wipes. can’t brush your teeth? try mouthwash. another example for me is i hate doing dishes, so i just use paper plates instead. you can find little hacks a long the way until you are able to find the strength and motivation to do the things. and reward yourself after completing the tasks too! maybe it will be easier to shower if you buy a nice scented body wash or something to make the experience special, and less of a “task.” hope some of that helps. good luck 💕

This could be helpful or not for you, but it works for me. If I'm having a really hard time I will do... Clown makeup(special interest) because I enjoy it, and for me taking makeup off with makeup remover vs taking a shower to take it off is way worse. So maybe try something that relates to something you enjoy if that makes sense. Any improvement is improvement. I wish you the best!!

I have this problem. Reward sheets and stickers don’t work for me. What does is figuring out why I couldn’t take a shower. Why I couldn’t brush my teeth. I couldn’t brush my teeth because it hurt my arms. So I got a handless toothbrush. I couldn’t shower because the noise and standing. So now I take baths! Find the reasons and then try to make it fun. I even have bath crayons and water guns!

I so get that, especially when really fatigued. I just tell myself that I know I will feel so much better the more effort I put into myself! A nice outfit, freshly washed hair and some makeup makes me feel more energised and productive!

i have really bad executive functioning and sometimes i'm in too much pain to actually do stuff like take a shower & brush my teeth. i really don't like the feeling of being dirty (and just. being dirty too but i can't help it sometimes haha), so to keep myself from getting over stimulated i'll do like,, hygiene short cuts i guess? face wipes instead of washing my face, dry shampoo, deodorant, and mouthwash instead of brushing my teeth is what i do :) it isn't as good as the real thing, but it helps me feel fresh & i feel like its helped me form some better hygiene habits in the process. hope this helps :)

@writer92 For sure! I'm not sure how to reply to people but I appreciate every single response, all so helpful in so many ways

I struggle with the same when I’m in a depression. Have been struggling again lately. Then I feel lazy and then just guilty for being lazy then it’s just a repetitive cycle. It’s helpful to read so many suggestions and know I’m not alone ♥️

Pick two rewards. Determine the habit (example: brush teeth every day, shower four times a week). Once you do the habit for a week - reward yourself. Once you do the habit for two weeks, reward yourself again. By then, you will have done it for three weeks straight and it should be easier

Sitting down to take a shower or taking a bath can help a little. Everyone else has already covered the basics. Keep track of when, reward when it happens, make it fun, plan it, play music, ect. Whatever you do as long as you bathe every once in a while it’s all good.

I struggle with the same thing. I use a sticker chart like some other people here. I also use products that I enjoy the smell of. I also use a shower chair to help because standing takes a lot of energy for me. I also ask my husband to keep me company in the bathroom and talk to me, or I use a playlist that I created. I find YouTube comforting as well.

alcohol wipes or baby wipes or even just a wet cloth and a bow of water for cleaning your face and body when you don’t have enough energy to stand is a lifesaver also traveling toothbrushes to keep by your bed for when you can’t stand to go to the bathroom

I super struggle with self care things so I typically try and combine them - like I keep a toothbrush and my toothpaste in the shower so I can do it in there since looking in a mirror is difficult for me - finding ways to combine them helps and then it's more of a getting to do just one because the other is in the first one - I hope that makes sense - reach out if you ever need it :)

Showering used to be difficult for me but I’ve bought products that I enjoy using to help make me feel clean. They aren’t even expensive but I just like the way they smell/feel. I also hang eucalyptus from the shower head! It makes it something I look forward to now

I have that same problem. The thing that helped me was I would set a schedule for showering and set a time in the morning to brush my teeth. When I followed through with that I would reward my self with something small and honestly I would feel super proud of myself

When I have that problem, I like making a habit tracker on paper, and giving myself a gold star sticker when I complete it. I also set a number goal of stars, and if I get enough, I get a reward.
