Has anyone had an endoscopy? I'm going to get one tomorrow and I am kind of scared. Does it hurt?

@puddle I'm so sorry for seeing this so late. Yes, your heartburn can definitely be worse after. I actually had corrective surgery for reflux so I don't usually experience that after anymore (at least not as severe). It's been a few weeks now so I hope all is back to normal for you!

Just a heads up to anyone who got iris getting an endoscopy done, if you start experiencing any chest pain, go to the ER ASAP. I got one done two days ago and I’m now admitted to the hospital for anomia. It’s actually a rare complication to the surgery and it can become serious.

@Healthproblems1111 pneumonia not anomia

I have had five or six endoscopies (lots of tummy issues) and none of them caused me pain. Your throat might be a bit hoarse or mildly sore but that will go away in a day or two. I've never had any bad reactions.
@PeculiarPrincess I definitely have the sore throat, did you also get heartburn when you eat? cuz that's been happening to me

I have had it 3 times now, and it’s not too bad! There isn’t any pain, and the most uncomfy thing is the sore throat about an hour after because they were moving things back and fourth in there. Cold soft things help me with that after and it goes away midway through the day. Just remember if you have questions about anything ask your doctor while they are prepping you to go under and they should answer it all 💕 best of luck!!
@Kaislyn Thank you! I had it a couple hours ago. It went okay. The medicine I had to take before it was disgusting but other than that it's fine
If you're offered sedatives, take them. You won't "need" them, and can get through it without, but it takes the edge off any anxiety. The camera was bigger than I thought it would be (I thought it would be thin like a breathing tube and then it was closer to a hose pipe (!) But the sedatives were lovely so I was OK with it xx good luck with the procedure, promise you will be ok
@probablysleeping thank you that's very informative!
@probablysleeping Also, things that I could eat during the period of time when I wasn't allowed food but was allowed "water": jelly, broth, tea with honey, and boiled sweets....! They don't leave any residue, so you can have them safely to give you energy and make your tummy feel less grumbly......
@probablysleeping oh that's really helpful I will keep that in mind !! <3
The worst is just a sore throat after. So maybe plan for soft foods? Ice cream
@Atheris oh okay I will
I had one & was put under, so it didn't hurt at all. They just literally learned nothing from it so it was pointless. Doctors kept telling me even after all the imaging & test that I have heartburn when I actually have tight junctions from sensitivity to gluten which I had to find out on my own by chance when a random YouTube video popped up about it & I was like this is literally explaining exactly what I'm going thru- why don't any doctors know about this? Wtf Anyways, good luck!
@Kittypop I'm so sorry your experiencing that. Doctors really do suck most of the time, especially for medical issues like that. I have a very similar experience. It's awful but I hope one day they will listen to you and thank you so much!

@puddle 🤗 it's good to have places like this where we can share our experiences bc I feel like a lot of the times we help each other more haha
Hey! i’ve had 4 endoscopes because i have EoE, Allergic reactions and chronic nausea (this one is without an apparent cause so far) they don’t hurt at all, but a weird sensation so uncomfortable but not pain. If you opt for sedative it helps and if you get a local anaesthetic throat spray don’t be alarmed if it feels like your throat is swelling and you can’t breathe - you can it’s just that it’s numbing the area the scope will pass by! I wish my gastro told me this before my scope because i thought i was allergic to it but it’s actually completely normal. Best of luck

Many people have shared their experiences with endoscopies, and most of them report that it doesn't hurt. They are often given anesthesia or sedation during the procedure, so they don't feel anything. Some may experience a mild sore throat afterward, but it usually clears up quickly.
