Question: How can I avoid having nightmares every night? Backstory: I have been put in psychiatric hospital units, with the longest amount spent in one being 6 months. It has been almost 2 years since my last admission. I have been having reoccurring nightmares 2-4 times a week about being sent back. Usually in these dreams, im sent back for small things, such as not smiling, having a panic attack, or crying. I know i cant go back for something like that, but now everywhere i go, im reminded of those units. It is starting to heavily interfere. I dont see my therapist for another 2 weeks, so right now im just trying to stay calm.

This was me until I started using cannabis. Now I don’t dream except for very rarely, and I haven’t had a nightmare in years.

i would suggest edibles or at least cbd gummies! they have worked wonders for my nightmares.

the only thing i’ve found that helps is sleeping with an animal if you have one that’ll cuddle with you ☺️ sleeping in a new setting such as moving the bed around in your room or on the couch helps me for some odd reason as well

I like prazosin as mentioned, sometimes though my nightmares still happen.. I try to feel myself in the dream and figure out the illogical parts to show it isn't real. Sometimes I can even turn them dark and they stop... idk how this happens but it helps and it came from refocusing

Something that helped me with my nightmares and night terrors was like “being in the dream” so I put myself there I was the 4 year old I was and I stood up and changed the dream so stopping what happened because I am now old enough to help. It took a few weeks but ultimately really helped me. I’ve had that dream since I was 4 and have always woken up crying/screaming from it, my therapist told me to try that and I was SHOCKED when I had the dream again and was able to stop the situation and fix it in my head. You basically rewrite your dream/memory. It helped me a lot.

That was what happened to me. I increased my caffeine intake

I was put on prazosin to help with my nightmares and it worked. the only issue is that it's technically a blood pressure medication so if your blood pressure is normal it could get too low. that's why I had to go off of it

Prazosin worked very well for me at night.

i have a nightmare disorder and i honestly don’t know how to stop them immediately, but i’d talk to a doctor as well as your therapist. there are medications for nightmares - they aren’t fool proof by any means, but they can really lessen the intensity of the dreams for me; right now my psychiatrist has me on a small dose of seroquel before bed for my nightmares. i still get them but they aren’t quite as bad as they wouldve been otherwise. nightmares are tough because there ISNT a full instant fix; i’m sorry you’re going through this, it’s really rough and you’re strong for reaching out for help
