For those Autistics in the work field... What do you think is the best kind of career for someone with a high functioning Autism disorder? I'm curious about what's out there 😊

I am studying to be a dog trainer because dogs are one of my special interests. I've tried a lot of different fields and it took some trial an error to see what I felt most comfortable doing. You also have to consider schooling/how much work is required to get into this field? I am smart but I don't do well in a school setting, so anything that requires a formal education I ruled out for myself.

my partner is a game mechanic! he fixes arcade games all day, gets to take apart and put back together all kinds of machines, and rarely has to interact with anyone other than a few coworkers, which is also great because they share an intense interest in their work so he can just talk and talk and talk if he wants

I work at a children's museum as a visitor assistant. I help visitors play with exhibits, play with kids, clean exhibits, answer customers questions, & sometimes interact with guests, not all the time cuz I get anxious around new people. But the job has helped me get out of my comfort zone & improve my people skills. It's part time cuz I physically, mentally, & emotionally can't do full-time besides the fact that waking up & going to work at a specific time each day makes me lose interest.

I work at a facility where we have dog boarding, day care, bathing, and grooming. I work in all areas, and on a good day I can work at the front desk ☺️

I couldn't work full time in an office. I loved what I did, but not the environment and the masking all day everyday. I do what I was doing before from home now, with a more flexible schedule so I have time for my special interests
I currently work in the records department of the police department. I like the environment of the office, but the lack of understanding social cues like sarcasm are hard sometimes
Definitely depends on the person and they're individual needs/accommodations needed. Also the term "high functioning" when referring to autism is not the best way to describe it. It has been found time and time again that this is not how autism works. It also states that there are people who are "low functioning" which is just dehumanizing.

@JaiJai I'm just trying to explain and educate. Not trying to start a fight
@JaiJai Thanks for explaining. I'm still figuring out the right terminology 😊
Depends on the person. I would say if you have a special interest, try to make that into something you can do for work. My special interest is engineering and while I’m not good at reading so college will be difficult I want to be able to make that into a job
I'm currently clean cat cages at an SPCA and I love it. I am also a veterinary assistant working on my vet tech degree. I plan on going to school for conservation and animal behavior as well eventually to work at a zoo and in research
I'm going into insurance and while I feel like the jobs in office are bad for my social differences, the field itself is very intricate and has remained a hyper focus for 4 years
I really enjoy cosmetology it gives me science and creativity and also texture and smell that is good I'm naturally good at it the only problem is the school I go to now is Aveda and it is very much a corporate hell hole using students to profit the company, they teach many good things but my differences very much stand out and there have been days where I felt like I was being hazed into a sorority but I found a job at a high class salon it is an Aveda salon where the owner and management is so down to earth and understanding and it is incredible
