no, i do not find this true at all. i suffer from severe depression and I have had suicidal thoughts before. I still have depression, example: it is hard for me to get out of bed everyday. however, because of resources like therapy and medication i no longer have those strong suicidal like thoughts. i hope this makes since and just my opinion! here if you need to talk, you’re loved!

just because you don't have any thoughts of suicide doesn't mean you can't be depressed. I've been depressed for more years than I care to admit. I've been on several meds, none worked until I was put on fluoxetine. I took fluoxetine for several years and would still be on it but I started falling and started breaking bones. NOT FUN! Found out that fluoxetine and my pain meds didn't like each other and began fighting ... causing a war so, I am now on a different drug that so far likes to play nicely with others. If you don't think your med is working, talk to your dr and ask what else you can try. I hope you can find a remedy.

I've struggled with depression on and off for most of my life and wasn't diagnosed until much older because of this. Just because I don't want to hurt myself doesn't mean I'm not busting into tears everytime I get out of the view of other people, that I can sleep at night or stop the feeling that the entire world hates me and is caving in on me.

Not true. Depression is like an onion, many different layers. I was suicidal at one time long ago, now I am borderline agoraphobic and depression can be crippling at times, but not to a suicidal level.

Nope, this isn't true from personal experience. I have had anxiety/depression along with others for years. Last August until around May this year I was in a deep depression. Worst ever for me. I knew something wasn't right but didn't realize how bad it was until I started therapy. I have never had suicidal thoughts. There are many different symptoms to depression. I read last week that not one of us has the exact symptoms.

Nope, as someone who deals with depression who is now not suicidal, and as a psychology major in college, u do not have to have suicidal thoughts/ideation to have depression. Whether u have those thoughts or not may effect the severity that ur diagnosis is considered, but things don’t have to get to that point for ur experience to be considered depression. Ur experience is valid and I hope u have the support u need to help!

@oswinthefox You can still be depressed, it's all about how you feel. You may be feeling numb. That's how fluoxetine made me. It can take trying a lot of medications, so I've heard, to find the right one. And each med can take awhile to be effective. I'm not actively on medications anymore. A psychiatrist alone was not helpful at all. Meds alone was not helpful at all. Now I just live depressed until I can find a treatment I benefit from. Not being suicidal is a great step into depression management, however. I think you should be proud that you're heading into a better direction. Depression treatment doesn't have to be hard as long as you have a treatment plan and a doctor that sees YOU as an individual, not a medical case. My psychiatrist was a pill pusher and she played the "I care so much" act long enough to give me hope, then dropped it and just kept pretending that the meds would help me soon and they never did. But remember, nobody experiences the same thing. If you feel like your psychiatrist isn't seeing YOU a person with valid struggles and crises, try to find a therapist to help you understand your treatment. You can share your concerns too and it could also help your perspective.

Thats not true cause Ive had it since a young age. However I recently had an experience trying to get to an autistic diagnosis. They only seemed to care if I wasn't suicidal because they recommended me somewhere else. I wasn't coming for mental health being bad though I just wanted a diagnosis but they just kept making sure I wasn't thinking of harm. So maybe society just treats it that way. It makes it hard for us to talk about it like this.

No. There are different aspects to depression. It doesn't have to be suicidal. That's one symptom. I've suffered from depression for years and sometimes yes I am suicidal, sometimes I'm not.
